Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer is the best product. Like usual, I pulled it out of the box without reading any instructions, installed the 2 AA batteries and started taking readings, and they were off, way off. I thought I had a defective unit! But after reading the instructions, found out it was my fault. It said not to use it in windy conditions, and I was outside in the sun/wind, it also said to let the unit stabilize to the surrounding temp for 15 minutes, which I had not done.

So, I took it inside, waited 15 min, and guess what, it works fine. Here are a few things I see as being better than most, it uses AA, not AAA. You will get more readings on a set of batteries, thereby being cheaper to operate.

It will also check room temp, apparently, it has a separate sensor for this, it does not use the IR, so pointing it at something will not make any difference while in room temp mode. The unit I received reads correctly.

It can also measure surface temp, such as a baby bottle, where most only do body temp. The beep can be turned off. Once it is set to F, it stays on F, even after removing batteries, some units keep defaulting to C each time it is turned on, which is a pain, UPDATE to F or C setting, the first units I received would stay defaulted to F, even after changing the batteries, I ordered a few more, and they will default back to C when changing batteries.

The first units had a mfg sticker of 6-20, the second units I received had a 5-20 date, apparently, there was a firmware change in the units. So no telling what you will get. In-room mode, the range is 32-104° F in surface mode range is 32 – 140° F in body mode range is 89.6 to 109.2° F The default for the screen turning red in body mode is 100.4° F

I have ordered 3 of these, and all work excellent. Looking at the bad reviews I see most are not reading the manual and knowing the proper way to use the unit.

One said it kept reading his temp as 76°, That means it was set in the room temp mode, as body mode only goes down to 89.6. Many are saying it only reads C, again, they are not reading the manual, very simple to change to F. It even states if you have sweat on your forehead, you should wipe that off, as that will affect the reading.

If people would learn how to read, there would be almost no bad reviews. Remember the part about it having to be in a stable environment? if you carry this in your car, don’t expect it to read correctly, this unit needs to be in a temp stable location for a minimum of 15 minutes, if your car is really hot, it could take 30 minutes for the unit to stabilize. It is mainly for staying and using indoor!

On one unit, the battery door opened easy, other units were not easy at all, I was afraid I would break to door pushing so hard, so I used a jewelers screwdriver, placed in the seam and twisted slightly, the door opened easy. Some people are confused at which way to install the batteries, once you open the door, look at the metal contact on the lid, it has the + and – mark on there.
