K&N Motorcycle Oil Filter
K&N Motorcycle Oil Filter: High Performance, Premium, Designed to be used with Synthetic or Conventional Oils: Fits Select Harely Davidson, Buell Motorcycles, KN-171C
The design of K&N Motorcycle Oil Filter has changed since my last post. See picture attached (old filter on left, the new filter still in a protective wrap on right).
The center female threaded part of the old filter was raised (and had more openings) to facilitate connection before the gasket engaged. Now the center portion is nested lower, so the threads won’t engage easily. Did manage to get the new filter to fit by exerting pressure on it while engaging the thread. As a result,
the filter needs fewer turns to tighten. I added my oil, started the bike, obtained usual oil pressure, and no evidence of any leaking.
I can’t honestly recommend these filters for a 2012 HD FLHTK until K&N resolves this issue.
Bought 2 filters (black and chrome units). Will probably return the second unused one. K&N, take note.
Original Post – Arrived on time, and in new condition. Have used the K&N filter instead of the HD filter for several oil changes now.
When visually comparing them, they appear identical with the exception of the nut head on the K&N filter, which is a very convenient feature.
Taking the oil filter off an Ultra is an awkward (and often messy) task. The fit and finish of this product are excellent.
I’ve had no problems with installation. Is the filtering capability as good as the stock filter?
There is no direct evidence to suggest the product differs from the OEM item.
As it relates to engine wear, I suspect regular oil change frequency is more important than minor differences in the oil filters. Be good to your machine and it will be good for you.Promised Review By Dr J the Canuck
