I did a lot of research before going with this Digital Cooking Thermometer. Many sites recommended this one in particular so I decided not to go cheap and get one of the $20 ones available.

I gave one probe a quick test in some hot oil and it matched my candy thermometer I normally use so it seemed pretty accurate and I assumed the other was accurate as well.

I used this on July 4th for smoking a brisket. Used one probe for smoker temp and the other probe in the brisket. Being able to know the internal temp from anywhere in the house was a luxury I didn’t know I was missing out on.

This alone makes it a great buy. I also learned that my smoker temp gauge was off by about 25 degrees so when I thought I was smoking at 250 in the past I was really at 275.

Knowing the internal temp of the meat without having to open up the smoker and take periodic readings was great also.

I don’t know how I have been running my smoker without this for so long. I was able to determine when the stall was happening so I could use the Texas crutch to get my brisket temperature up. 13 hours later I had the smoked my best brisket yet.

The thermometer was really easy to set up. The range was great. I was able to be in the front yard with my daughter and still keep an eye on the smoker temp in the back yard.

The alarm feature is awesome too. I was able to get a little more sleep after getting the smoker set up early in the morning. No need to constantly go to the back door and check it.

Since I have only had the product for a week so far I can’t speak to the durability of the product but it does have a warranty and since so many bbq sites recommended this one I am not too worried.

Pros
  • 1. It is accurate and works well. I tested it with boiling, tepid, and cold water against my expensive analog thermometer. No variance between leads.
  • 2. Never lost connection and was easy to use. I got 250 feet no problem.
  • 3. Lost connection alarm
  • 3. Great length of leads. They are plenty long.
  • 4. Stainless braided leads.
  • 5. Batteries included!?!?!? (YES!)
  • 6. Durable without being heavy. No need to worry about knocking it off a table or such.
Cons
  • 1. Ports should be obviously labeled to indicate lead 1 or 2.
  • 2. Grill clip is not very functional and hard to use. It slips around and really is not very useful. I am going to have to purchase a more functional one.
  • 3. The clip on the back of the sensor is wonky. It hangs at a weird angle when hung on a handle or such.
  • 4. Temp reached alarm is not very loud or adjustable.
  • 5. Lack of lock on remote unit. Clip it on and go.. But do not bump it. You may just find that your rare steak is now well done. A simple lock function would take care of that.
  • 6. No low temp alarm. Would have been nice to have a low temp alarm. But… for the price….. I can keep an eye on it.
