I like Creative Pebble 2.0 USB-Powered Desktop Speakers. I wanted a low cost option for my desktop, but also wanted decent quality sound. I wasn’t expecting any hi-fidelity for the price point, but I wasn’t going to settle for crap either. At first I was looking at 2.1 speakers with a dedicated subwoofer to get a good range of sound, but every system under $50 that I could listen to were terrible. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. So I decided to forgo the crappy subwoofer and go for an above average 2.0 system vs a subaverage 2.1 system.

These Pebble speakers were exactly what I needed. The sound is surprisingly rich, full, and relatively loud for the little speakers. There’s also minimal distortion at low to moderately high volumes. At max volume, the speakers act as expected and induce a grimace. The bass isn’t chest pounding, but audible and discernable and are well balanced at moderate levels, and sound much better than some of the 2.1 systems with subwoofers that I listed to prior to buying these. For reference, I have a JBL Flip bluetooth portable speaker, and these Pebble speakers sound about the same as those.

The speakers are the size of a softball. They don’t take up a lot of room on the desk and are definitely more aesthetically pleasing than the majority of speaker systems out there for the same price. The on/off/volume dial on the speaker is actually quite convenient compared to using my mouse to adjust the volume via software. I have the computer set at 75% volume, and use the volume dial on the speaker to adjust. There’s no grill over the speakers so they are exposed, but shouldn’t be an issue for most people.

I have the speakers in a room 12 ft x 10 ft and it fills the room well with good sound. If I want audiophile quality sound, I’ll put on my headphones or head to the living room and turn on the dedicated stereo, but for low cost speakers for listening to Pandora while working on my computer or watching a YouTube video, these are just what I wanted.
